Leicester City have been rocked by two injury blows, with central defenders Wes Morgan and Filip Benkovic substituted during the FA Cup clash with Wigan Athletic.

Morgan appeared to sustain a groin problem in the first half.

He has made six appearances in the Premier League this term, with Caglar Soyuncu and Jonny Evans emerging as Brendan Rodgers’ first-choice centre-back pairing.

However, the injury has taken on added significance with Benkovic also going off in the second half.

The 22-year-old has struggled for minutes under manager Brendan Rodgers.

He played 28 minutes in the EFL Cup clash with Fleetwood Town earlier this season but has largely been playing with the U23 side in 2019/20.

However, Benkovic started against the Championship side as the Foxes won 2-0 and was substituted in the 67^th minute, to be replaced by Christian Fuchs.

The Leicester Mercury have claimed that, as a result, Rodgers’ men could look to buy a centre-back in January.

A victory with a price

This is going to sting for Rodgers.

As it stands, he has two senior centre-backs and, with the club attempting to chase Champions League qualification down, they can ill-afford to lack depth in a key position.

However, if both Morgan and Benkovic are ruled out for any length of time, they will be crossing their fingers that there are no injuries sustained by Evans and Soyuncu.

Of course, at this stage of the season, the Foxes are performing above expectations; they lie second in the Premier League, though they are 13 points behind Liverpool, and are 14 clear of fifth-placed Manchester United.

Any issues in defence could see that buffer slip.

Rodgers has a decision to make; reinforcements could well be necessary.
